Rehearsals have now begun
for South Hill Parks Summer Show(s), House and Garden.

House and Garden - TWO PLAYS RUNNING
TOGETHER AT THE SAME TIME WITH THE SAME CAST, one indoor and one outdoors, this
summer only. This is going to be HUGE!
the Wilde Community Theatre Company presents
House & Garden
by Alan Ayckbourn
Directed by Adrian McDougall and Bart Lee
A theatrical experience you won't forget! Two plays performed simultaneously in
different places and involving the same characters. It could only be the
remarkable world of Alan Ayckbourn. Friends, neighbours, and hired help are
gathered at an English country house on a cloudy August day in preparation for a
garden fête at which the guest of honor, for reasons of which no one is entirely
certain, is an alcoholic, promiscuous French movie star. As the storm clouds
gather, so too do the covert romantic liaisons, mistaken identity and
mischief-making as politics, love, marriage and friendship are all dragged
through the shrubbery in this hilarious bitter-sweet comedy.

Chalkfoot Funding
Appeal Denied by Arts Council
Kent TV
(an online television channel) who recently did a report on the arts
council funding
in Kent, this video includes rehearsal
scenes of Laurel and Hardy and other
theatres in Kent whom face the same fate as Chalkfoot Theatre Arts.
This video report can be viewed at

Latest News From
Chalkfoot
Following
a pre-Christmas warning by Arts Council England South East that it
intended to cut Chalkfoot’s £64,334 annual grant, the company has
received a letter confirming that funding will not be renewed as of
31st March 2008.
Out of 194 organisations nationally to have been threatened with
funding cuts, only 17 have been reprieved: none in the south east.
Nationally, organisations which have had their funding restored
include the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theatre, the Bush and Orange
Tree theatres in London and the Northcott Theatre in Exeter.
Chalkfoot now has just two months to find alternative financial
support if it is to run its annual programme of theatre touring to
70 rural venues in Kent and Sussex.
Following the Arts Council’s annual review, the company made a
formal complaint about their lead officer, and received the
following response from ACESE’s Executive Director, Felicity
Harvest: "From your letter and our internal investigation it appears
that there have been occasions over the past four months where your
lead officer has not communicated as clearly and promptly as we
would have liked."
Artistic Director Philip Dart says: "We received little warning of
the Arts Council’s cuts, although ACE’s own guidelines say that
companies must be given adequate notice. There were also
inaccuracies in our annual report and in ACE’s initial warning
letter. Although our appeal attempted to correct this
misinformation, we have been deeply concerned to find the same
statements repeated in the document informing us that our funding
has been cut."
Philip is not optimistic about the possibility of finding an
alternative source of funding to support Chalkfoot’s rural touring
work as he believes the number of companies who have lost funding
across the country will lead to enormous competition for available
funds.
We would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to the wide range of people,
including rural promoters, actors, journalists and local authority
officers who have supported us over this very difficult time.

Edwin Drood goes into
third and final week of rehearsal prior to production week, first two
performances already sold out. It looks like it's going to be a fast
paced, all singing, all dancing kind of show, and with a possible 266 different
endings depending on what the audience vote each night. As Charles Dickens
unfortunately died before finishing the novel, we will never know what he
intended but the again 'we' do not choose the ending 'you' do...

OK... so
what if Tarantino had written Macbeth?
Underscored by a highly charged soundtrack, cinematic form and
theatrical convention combine to create a production that is fast,
furious, comic and provocative...
After
Critical success with "Bill Shakespeare's Italian Job," this
dazzling new production confirms Malachi Bogdanov's reputation as a
major force in contemporary European theatre. |

How to
convey the sheer fun of this show - the wild high spirits and the
strange dark shadows. Imagine a Victorian theatre company who
decide to produce
their own dramatized and musical version of Charles Dickens'
unfinished novel
Edwin Drood. We have a Chairman who introducesthe scenes. We
have songs - lots of them, and he explains that later, because
Dickens did not resolve
his bizarre puzzle, the audience will vote on key questions that
will determine the outcome of the story. We are then whisked away to
the ancient cathedral city of Cloisterham. On a cold December
morning the choirmaster, John Jasper, awaits a visit
from his nephew, Edwin Drood, who is soon to be married to the
beautiful young Rosa Bud. The plot, inevitably, thickens... |
